Positive Behaviour for Learning at Carlisle Adventist College

At Carlisle Adventist College, we are committed to helping students take responsibility for their choices and make positive decisions about their behaviour. Our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) framework supports students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

A Whole-School Approach

PB4L is based on the Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports model from the University of Oregon. It is a school-wide approach that:

  • Reduces behavioural incidents
  • Increases teaching and learning time
  • Improves student achievement

By using evidence-based strategies, PB4L helps students make positive behavioural choices while ensuring they are recognised for their effort, conduct, and achievements.

PB4L in Action

Research from the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER) shows the impact of PB4L:

  • 73% less disruption in class
  • 71% increase in engagement in learning
  • 55% more students arriving on time for lessons

These outcomes show that PB4L creates a positive learning environment where students can succeed.

PB4L is linked with our School Values

Our school values are at the heart of PB4L. Through consultation with parents and staff, we identified four values that define our community:

  • Compassion
  • Achievement
  • Respect
  • Effort

Together, they form our slogan: “At Carlisle We CARE.” These values are visible throughout the school and are explicitly taught in classrooms and Chapel sessions. Every member of our community is encouraged to live these values in their daily interactions.

Building Character for Life

At Carlisle, we believe that strong character and positive behaviour are essential not just for learning, but for life. Our PB4L framework, combined with the CARE values, equips students with the skills to make good choices, contribute positively to their community, and reach their full potential.
